Good luck with your Rivers Project! It is important to focus on the earth's rivers. They are the lifelines for many cultures, now and long ago. As a native New Yorker from the Big Apple, we have the East and Hudson Rivers. These rivers would be a great story for your project... though there are no rapids to conquer.

On your next visit to New York, I invite you and your family to stop by the Queens County Farm Museum in Floral Park (northeast Queens). This is a 1772 Dutch Colonial farmhouse that has farm animals and is farmed organically. It is the oldest, continuous working farm in New York. As a member and docent, we are preserving a way of life that is slowly disappearing across this country. I am involved with the educational program for school children. We have workshops that teach the kids about farm life and how colonial children would have lived. There is a County Fair, Apple Festival, Pow Wow and other events that people enjoy attending throughout the year. Wylie would enjoy the animals.

This is a verse that I wrote many years ago while living in Wyoming. I had lived on the Wind River Indian Reservation (Arapaho and Shoshoni tribes) as a lay volunteer at St. Stephens Indian Mission. I think it describes the feelings that you have for "Oma Desala".

If I am feeling sick or a bit down... I can just hop on the couch put in a video... "Hey, it's Stargate marathon time!!!" and after awhile I am into the show, laughing, and feeling much better.

I have also met the most amazing group of people, from all over the world (many of whom have left you a birthday message here) just by being a fan. In most cases, being a fan of the same show has only been a starting point for some wonderful friendships.

OK... this is starting to sound totally corny, so I'll leave it at that with a simple... Thank You!

But in the last 5 years there has been a tremendous difference in him. I want to thank you on your birthday for the many hours of good entertainment you gave us and specially, for all you've taught us by your characters and life. Hi Rick. I would just like to say in as little as I can (or I would go on for ages) how much I admire you. I am a very big fan and you are definately my favourite actor. I first saw you on TV when my mum was watching a MacGyver movie. I was about 8 years old at the time and I can't really remember it much apart from my mum mentioning she was watching a sexy guy called MacGyver. (She was too busy drooling to find out your real name.) Since then I saw you on Stargate and thought 'I like him.' My mum didn't recognise you but then they showed the same MacGyver movie and I couldn't stop laughing when I found out you were the same person (and that you used to have blond, long hair.) Since then I have been an avid fan and have collected all the Stargate episodes.

My friends at school don't quite understand my fascination with you, but if they bothered to watch an episode of Stargate they might see things my way. Although when I showed my best friend a picture of you half naked holding baby Wylie she thought you were quite nice too... but refuses to watch Stargate for fear of being labeled a sci-fi geek.

Anyway enough babbling. You have made a great influence on my life and I admire all the things you do. Hope you have a great birthday and get all the things that you want.

The music you heard on the opening page is from the composition "Sea Shepherd". I composed this music originally for two harps. I found the title reading an article about you mentioning your interest in the protection of the environment and the waters of our planet. Quoting their website information, Sea Shepherd is an organisation that is 'dedicated to the protection and conservation of marine ecosystems and biodiversity.'

The name "Sea Shepherd" filled my mind with images of the open sea and whales and I worked these elements (waves, sonar-like sounds, whales diving) into the original composition. For this fragment I arranged the two themes for one harp and added a few "starry" harp glissandi for good measure.

Although I must have seen every episode of "MacGyver" at least two or three times, it is still one of my favourite television series. I can still watch "MacGyver", because they repeat the series over and over again here in the Netherlands, and since a week ago "Star-Gate" started again, so I watch that too. They are great series!!! I have also seen some of the movies you act in, and I really think that you're a great actor; you can play very different parts very convincingly.

Firstly, I'd just like to say that I hope you had a lovely Christmas with Wylie and Apryl and to wish you all the best for 2002.

Secondly, Happy Birthday for the 23rd, I'm sure you probably have some adventure planned for the day! It must really be amazing to receive so many birthday greetings from around the world!

I admire you, not only for your acting ability, but also for your compassion, generosity and dedication to the causes you believe in. Whilst we will miss you when you leave Stargate it is obvious that you will still have plenty of activities to occupy your time.

I hope that you will find the time to bring your family for a visit to Australia in the not too distant future. It truly is a beautiful land with many different experiences to be had. Unfortunately at the moment many parts of New South Wales are being ravaged by bushfires. The bush will eventually recover, although it will take some time. Devastatingly though, a very large number of native animals have perished in the fires (one report quoted 1 million!) and some species may even be lost, but we can hope for small miracles! Many homes were destroyed but no human life has been lost in the fires. Our oldest National Park (the second oldest in the world) has been badly affected with around 70% of the park destroyed. This is the second time in 10 years that the park has suffered severe fire damage and authorities are worried as to whether it will recover fully. Only time will tell.

I would just like to add that I have enjoyed watching you in MacGyver, Legend and now Stargate SG-1 plus your movies. It's a pity we don't get to see your lovely smile very often on SG-1 though!

Once again, enjoy your special day and keep up the good work you do (in everything!).
