RITE OF M'AL SHARRAN

Rite of M'al Sharran

The Rite of M'al Sharran is similar to a Last Rite and is based on the belief that when a Jaffa goes without his symbiote for any protracted length of time, his life flashes before his eyes. The Rite is rarely used with success, however. Bra'tac had tried twice to restore Jaffa with the ritual, and both times the attempt had ended in death.

After the power of the sarcophagus had forced Teal'c to believe that he had returned to the service of Apophis, Bra'tac used the Rite of M'al Sharran to rescue his soul by removing his prim'ta and taking him to the very threshold of death. As memories washed over him, he was forced to remember and to choose his true path. The Rite was successful, and Teal'c rejoined the SGC.

When Ba'al attempted to use brainwashing techniques on members of the Jaffa High Council, Maz'rai was so ashamed for having become a victim, and so fearful of not being able to overcome the effects, that he attempted to remove his own symbiote in a Rite of M'al Sharran. Unable to revive himself, however, he was later found dead.
