~ New Gate Episode: "When The West Was Still Wild" ~
In being rescued by the oddly dressed Stargate Marine, the bruised simply dressed elderly lady steadies herself against the wooden post of her vegetable vendor cart. Earning a living in uncertain times was never meant for one so frail, especially here in an outpost town since the arrival of these disparate "foreigners". The elderly lady asks the Stargate marine (Graham?) how he was going to get back her coin bag from the small mob of young men who had just stole it away then ran. And if he could please bring back her family heirloom they also stole after they roughhoused her down onto the ground. It was an ancestral metallic broach of strange design passed down from her grandmother who was of the local tribal people. (Graham?) lowers his brim and says, "I'm going to ask nicely". Then he runs off into the bustle of street noise, switching his gun's safety lock on, adjusts his leather gloves pulling them taunt.. which shouldn't leave a mark. Not by much.
Back at the off world military fort, a captain had recently stopped an ill-timed promotion and in a private talk, chastises the underling in his office. Before leaving, the earnest captain says that his attache' will stay and command the search/rescue party (then leaves but advises his attache' to watch their back with this one unless they want to wake to find a knife buried in it). When door shuts, the once smiling waving attache' drops the expression for a weary morbid one saying "I need a drink" then heads to underling's liquor cabinet and starts pouring herself a glass of "medicinal encouragement". Underling's expression also turn shades from compliance to annoyed and approaches the attache' to regain control of the reins from this soon-to-be trainwreck. Attache' between gulps: "..the position of serving as the captain's attache' is a means to an end. About what most jobs are, I would think." (then parlays with the underling about points which would interest the underling.. stealing from little old ladies). The Attache' continues, "Once night comes and favors another try, we will then remove said item from their possession, with extreme prejudice".. leaving no witnesses this time. Underling: "Would that not be called murder?" Attache' eyeing the contents of glass as she sloshes the beverage around to let it "air/breath" more. She then replies, "Such an untidy word which need not be spoken amidst otherwise pleasant surroundings as these (let's both hands spread outward to gesture to the upscale charm of the Captain's office). Would you not also agree, underling? But as you have already mentioned, we ARE in the midst of a war". More talk then underling says how his own actions were in-line with the goals of the District Regent as any loyal servant would and challenges the attache' as to where their loyalty lay.. Attache' studies her now empty glass in a more pessimistic light, and replies: "in this present conflict of differing ideologies, my loyalties reside quite firmly in support of the human cause". An eyebrow raises on the underling's face who says "..human?".
Outside as the captain leaves, his chief officer asks if it was wise to leave the attache' in the hands of the underling who aspires for quick promotion through the ranks through manipulation instead of duty. Captain says the (lady) attache' would be fine, "she's a survivor, and she will do whatever she has to in order to come out the other side no worse for wear". Inside, the underling lowers his gun and says that perhaps he'll not kill the attache'.. today. The attache' replies "As you wish, would have been truly disastrous to ruin such a lovely bouquet aroma as from dropping my glass of medicinal encouragement". Underling puts gun on table then walks to liquor cabinet where the attache' then pours him a drink. Underling: "I find you rather amusing. I never did like being amused, even from childhood". The attache' clicks glasses with that being held by underling and proposes a toast, "To an unamusing future.. and may the interloping aliens to this world never sway our resolve." To which the underling's smile reveals a gold tooth, fresh from his recent repatriation of lost alien artifacts.
In a closed room not so far removed from the Stargate member posing in the role of a disgruntled attache'. Two large marines sit at an old wooden table listening to the transmitted hidden microphone conversation with the Underling for a lead to a fabled "Lost Duchy Mine". In reality the remains of a long ago crashed Goa'uld ship which became a religious mythos to the local indigenous people who took to wearing animal mask head coverings.
