Richard Dean Anderson will be joining Captain Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society at a press conference to voice their opposition to the largest mass slaughter of marine mammals in the world – the brutal slaughter of over 325,000 seals this March and April in Canada.

                                                Date:         Monday, March 7th, 2005

                                                Time:        3:00pm

Location:  Basilica Recreation Centre, Room 205

                                                                  200 Richmond Street

                                                                  Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada

Richard Dean, the well-known and respected professional actor, star of the television shows Stargate and MacGyver, and Director of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, will be demonstrating his concern for the seals and his opposition to the cruel annual massacre of the defenseless seal pups.  For decades, Richard Dean has been an active environmentalist with deep concerns about wildlife and marine habitat conservation issues, and an active leader and supporter of Sea Shepherd.

On March 4th, the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s flagship Farley Mowat departed from Halifax to make an historic return to the Gulf of St. Lawrence on the East coast of Canada. The Farley Mowat is the only conservation vessel that will be going to the frigid ice floes of Canada to oppose and document the brutal slaughter of 350,000 baby seals, which is scheduled for March and April. Richard Dean will be joining the ship on the ice to observe the seals.

Founder and president of Sea Shepherd, Captain Paul Watson, a Maritimer (that is, he was born and raised in an eastern Canadian fishing village), is leading an international crew of volunteers to demonstrate that the world is watching and Canada will not be allowed to engage in this slaughter quietly.

“We will be there with cameras, on the ice, under the ice, and in the air. We intend to be there as shepherds to protect these incredibly beautiful creatures. We need to demonstrate to the world that this, the largest mass slaughter of any marine mammal species in the world, has no place in the 21st Century,” said Captain Paul Watson. “We have been fighting this obscene and bloody slaughter for a quarter of a century. We shut it down for ten years in 1984.  We need to build a movement to shut it down again and this time we need to shut it down permanently.”

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization in the U.S.  Founded in 1977 by Captain Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd’s mission is to defend, conserve, and protect marine wildlife and their habitats.
