Airdate: August 20, 2004

Teal'c has been granted permission to live off base on the condition that he maintain a low profile. His neighbor, Krista James, has struck up a friendship and asks him to teach her the martial art form of lok'nel. However, Krista is in an abusive relationship with her boyfriend, Doug, and when Teal'c threatens to kill Doug if he ever hurts Krista again, a neighbor witnesses his warning. In fact, someone with a surveillance camera has been watching Teal'c ever since he moved off base. One evening, Teal'c returns home to find Krista very upset, and she begs him to take her away.

Teal'c and Krista spend the night together in a motel, but the next morning Krista is gone, and officers, acting on a tip, arrest Teal'c for murder and kidnapping, informing him that Doug was found dead in Krista's apartment. Meanwhile, Carter is taken by surprise when Pete Shanahan produces a ring and asks her to marry him. She needs time to consider his proposal, but she later turns to him for help in investigating the case against Teal'c. At the SGC, Daniel receives a mysterious phone call offering evidence of Teal'c's innocence in exchange for his translation of text written in Ancient.

Daniel meets with members of the rogue NID, now calling themselves the Trust. It was the Trust who had been shadowing Teal'c, who had framed him for murder after Krista had accidentally killed Doug in self-defense, and now they have kidnapped Krista and are threatening to kill her unless Daniel cooperates. He reluctantly completes the translation, and once it is uploaded and confirmed, his captors vanish in a beam of light, just as SWAT teams move in. As Teal'c, bids farewell to his neighbors and returns to his quarters on the base, Carter has considered her answer to Pete, and she accepts his proposal.

NOTES OF INTEREST

  • O'Neill had petitioned the Office of Special Investigations to allow Teal'c to live off base now that he no longer carries a symbiote and is less of a security risk. The request was approved under certain provisions that required him to keep a low profile.
  • Teal'c used the cover story that Dr. Daniel Jackson was an archaeologist who had hired him to come over from Mozambique, and that his tattoo is a tribal mark from his homeland.
  • Teal'c's apartment was number 403. Krista James lives next door at number 402.
  • Daniel is known as the one man on Earth capable of translating both Goa'uld and obscure dialects of the Ancient language.
  • Pete Shanahan has put in for a transfer to the Colorado Springs Police Department.
  • The ex-NID operatives, formerly known as the rogue NID now call themselves The Trust, and state that their goal is to protect the planet.
  • Lok'nel - an ancient form of martial arts training

MEMORABLE REMARKS

  • I like what you're doing with the place. Sort of, um, Jaffa chic with an East African flair. [Daniel]
I have discovered there are many programs on television which offer advice in the area of home design and decoration. [Teal'c]
  • You travel to other planets to do battle with alien creatures bent on galactic domination. Just because you don't wear a tight spandex outfit doesn't mean that you're not - although... that's an idea you might want to consider. [Pete]
  • On Chulak, a dispute between a man and a woman that cannot be resolved necessitates a pledge break. It must be requested by one and granted by the other. [Teal'c]
And if that doesn't work? [Daniel]
    A weapon is required. [Teal'c]
  • You haven't tried to confuse me with any scientific babble for the last couple of days, and that's a red flag to me. [O'Neill]
