Other favorite "older" TV shows?

Post by CMac »

I suppose I could have opened this discussion to everyone's favorite TV show besides MacGyver or Stargate: SG-1, but I'm actually more interested in how many of you like other "older" TV shows, not current ones. For me personally, I cannot stand modern TV and prefer to watch re-runs of older properties because I happen to find them more creative and entertaining and the producers back then were willing to take more risks without being so beholden to the almighty dollar. So, if you're like me and enjoy watching the old shows on the nostalgia channels, which ones are your favorite?

Magnum P.I. Because he's so the opposite of MacGyver. MacGyver has all neat and tidy written all over him: doesn't drink, smoke or carry a gun, he is healthy and has his life pretty much sorted out. Magnum is not that at all: he's sloppy, drinks alcohol, smokes cigars every now and than, he does carry a gun, loves hotdogs, and he is the one asking favors from friends instead of the other way around. Magnum is also in my opinion a little more boundary pushing, a lot more daring than MacGyver. He did things, MacGyver probably never would have and things happened that never would've happened in MacGyver.

Xena Warrior Princess. The first action/adventure show with two female leads as far as I know. Though definitely focused on a older audience, yet I have seen episodes at a fairly young age of 10. They really went dark in several episodes switched with comedy episodes. Now after Spartacus, I wished they made Xena like Spartacus.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. That's so totally my youth, there was nothing more popular than Power Rangers in the mid '90s.

These are like the three of the older shows I like. Magnum came in much much alter though I mostly grew up with MacGyver, Xena and Power Rangers.

Almost anything science fiction is good with me. I am a big fan of all of the Star Trek series (yes, I am a trekkie). I have also been a big fan of "The Simpsons" since it began all those many years ago.

I love the old shows too. Growing up in the 50's I was raised on the westerns - Rawhide, The Lone Ranger and my first "love", Roy Rodgers (okay, I was 5 yrs old and he had a horse!). Then there was Bonanza, The Rebel, The Rifleman and Maverick. As I grew over, I started to follow detective and odd shows like the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits. I've been watching the Amazing Race every since it's been on, but mainly to see the places they travel to. (The constant bickering between team members gets on my nerves.) Recently I've followed shows like The Good Wife, Madame Secretary and Blacklist because of the fantastic writing. I'm not that fond of most of today's comedies. I'll take the old Dick Van Dyke show or Hogan's Heroes over Two Broke Girls or Mom any day. And last (but not least) I gotta have my Blackhawks Hockey.
If you can't say anything nice.....

Related to my love of astronomy Ive always been a fan of science fiction like Startrek, The Invadors, StarWars and most of all Stargate. In fact, I've never been that excited about any tv-series like Stargate.
But Startrek was a close second.

And does anyone here knew the series of Carl Sagan "Cosmos"! The old one? :D
