The Gauntlet

Another good episode with the early MacGyver, I love it!
The opening gambit was so cool, kind of crazy, what you can do with a map!

Image

His pursuers were lousy shooters when he slid down the dune on the map, they could have shot him easily, free field of fire, fortunately they were all unable

Image

He mended the balloon with the map, wondering how easily he climbed up. But at the time, his fear of heights was not known, was it? On the other hand, fear of death probably inspires :?

Image

The real story was again quite adventurous, with many MacGyverisms delighting in their simplicity, at least me.

When he prepared the lizard over the fire and Kate complimented him, his reaction was so sweet. Love this scene and then the kiss comes, where I thought for the first time in the series, this kiss was really wanted by him and he enjoyed it.

Mac and Kate try to come to the border to Mexico.

They reached the border and were already expected. Appearance MacGyver!!
In a short time he has a plan!

Mac sweaty and oily was nice to look at!
Image

They escaped in a wooden barrel, always wondering, how did they fit together in this barrel?
Maybe the size is deceiving.

Nice episode with beautiful pics of MacGyver

FAntastic comments, JK, with the great screenshots about The Gauntlet!!!! Agree with you about "the kiss" = and about the closeups of Mac = so nice to look at!

Well, it's Friday again, so I guess that means it's time for the discussion of the next episode of MacGyver: The Heist

This episode is, to me, a spectacular one because of the ending......and because of the kisses at the end.......always nice.

Please discuss and I'll chime in later with more comments. :D :D :D

This episode had the great escape scene: car parachuting from the plane; the "GREAT, GREAT comment"; Mac holding off Chris's advances prompting her to say "more coffee, more coffee?" and tug the mug from his hand. All of these, and more I love! What I didn't love was Chris turning the car full of diamonds around and then trying to drive away from the casino - if she'd gone straight out she would have made it!

Any episode where you can get Mac in a tux is ok with me. He looks so good dressed up!! I love when he is filling the wine glasses and needs to lower the level of the liquid in one so he sips the wine and makes a "yuck" face.

Yes, thanks for the screencaps that did jog the memory a bit.

You're right, there's a lot to love about this episode......including the items you list.

Right from the start I loved Mac's sense of humor = "Your name is MacGyver? So is mine..." And then twice Chris speculates on what MacGyver does for a living = asking him, "What exactly do you do?" (a question Mac is asked many times in the series,,,,,to which he gave no answer this time) and then later when he was explaining how he'd get the diamonds back - she exclaimed, "My God, you're a thief!" And then there's the simple fact that Mac looks so very handsome in the tux = but I love how he tries to smooth down his hair which is standing straight up at the back.... :D :D :D . And I also loved the diversion Mac devised using the paperclip and thread to unzip the lady's dress....

And the scene as you describe it of Chris tugging the mug from his hand saying, "More coffee"......while Mac is looking soooo cute in his early morning pose (and I guess this was before the writers knew that Mac doesn't drink coffee),.,..,.,is a great scene. Chris ends up holding onto Mac's hand for a little while,,,,,   Mac just has that slight smile of his that is so cute and sweet and sexy.

There are a lot of MacGyverisms, especially re: Mac getting into the suite of Caitlin to get the diamonds out. Thought the use of wine glasses and wine and the bird's tone was brilliant and effective. Thought the presence of the light fixtures - both the one that got him through the laser beam entrance into the suite and then the one he used to slush the diamonds down the gutter pipe = were very convenient. Also, the fact that Chris made it down to the car JUST in time to put the final part of the gutter on so that the diamonds would slush down into the trunk of the car was quite a trick.

Then there's the fantastic parachute escape scene that you describe...one of the most spectacular endings of any of the episodes, IMHO. And when Mac says, "You can come up now. How you feelin' " And Chris does come up and looks out and then kisses Mac = twice = quite beautifully done,,,,,even if it is a little hard to believe that the parachute would hold that car just perfectly parallel to the ground....but then, that's MacGyver for you,,,,he always figures things out just right! All in all a very nice episode, IMHO. Well done!

The Heist is one of my favorite episodes of season one. I can't proclaim only one as my favorite, even one for each season, but The Heist is definitely in the top episodes, even of all seasons all together :)

I love this episode mainly for all the reasons you all cited: humor, tux... that cute morning face.. :P
I like the episodes designed like a Bond/Mission Impossible movie where there is an undercover op & a secret agent trying to get something back from the bad guys :)

Yes! At first I was like "what, no, you're not suposed to drink alcohol!" and wondered if that part of the character was not established yet.
And then I saw his disgusted face and I laughed  I know that face way to much, I have the same one when I have to drink even a small sip of wine

The most striking to me in that scene was How did she not fall!?
Mac is tied up with the seat belt and all, but Chris seems to be only curled up at the bottom of the seat.. I don't get how she didn't fall, because we clearly see the car turned upside down at the beginning

Conclusion: I love that episode, it's one of my all times favorites :D

The Heist is a favorite episode of mine, too. To me it kind of represents what MacGyver was all about, even though it was another Alan Smithee episode that perhaps didn't turn out the way the director envisioned.

For one thing, it stepped away from that Cold War style show of the 80s where all the bad guys were either Communists or stereotyped third world dictators. We had a clear bad guy, but not political. And we had a strong female character who once again could stand on her own and became an asset in Mac's plans rather than a damsel in distress who needed to be rescued. So I liked the premise.

Then I loved the whole James Bond aspect of the "caper." I reminded me of those movies from the 60s with actors like Cary Grant in places like the Riviera. There was a plan in place, but then in true MacGyver fashion things go wrong and he has to improvise anyway, so the best of both worlds. And he made such a good unlikely Bond, looking fabulous in his tux but still unable to control his unruly hair.

The MacGyverisms were mostly simple and low-tech but they led up to a spectacular and unexpected Final Escape. Can someone remember reading an article about that final stunt with the parachuting red car? I swear I read it somewhere but I've read so many articles over the years that I lose track. In any case I THINK I remember that they really did do that stunt, that it wasn't just another example of footage borrowed from another movie. (Right?) And of course they didn't actually have people in the car when they did it, and they weren't expecting it to flip upside down, but the footage still worked and made a great final effect. (Did I imagine all that?)

Anyway, I had liked the series a lot right off the bat with the pilot, but it was the back-to-back episodes of Gauntlet and Heist that made me the die-hard fan and convinced me to record and save all the episodes. (Later in the season comes another series of back-to-back favorites.)

MacGyver evolved a lot over the years, but this was the version of the character that I still remember so fondly - slick but gentle, clever but cool under pressure, passionate but with a sense of humor, admirable but self-deprecating - basically the whole package. I miss those days. :)

I think I found the answer to your question about the "escape in the car from the plane", Kate, by googling it! On MacGyver Online the following is written:
"The footage of the car parachuting out of the plane was taken from an MG car commercial. The full clip is shown at the end of the "Worlds Greatest Stunts" documentary and can be watched here(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgoJafe ... e&t=44m10s)". I don't know - it doesn't look like the same footage at all and is much harder to follow.

That clip at the end of the youtube video does look like the same stunt, but does it say somewhere in the episode where it was taken from? I haven't watched the whole thing. I'm not sure what I'm imagining, then, about the filming of that stunt. Maybe trying to match the original footage?

It sort of makes sense that they would "borrow" rather than create such an expensive and complicated stunt, but then, I wasn't sure that the Pegasus stunt was original until RDA started talking about it in interviews.

I do know that footage in Eagles was taken from another source, and many years ago in NJ there was a furniture company that used that footage of "MacGyver" climbing the mountain in its ads. The original source, as I recall, was a movie or documentary about Native Americans. I have the title of it here somewhere but I can't recall it at the moment.
