I thought that as their commanding officer the herd was supposed to follow HIM.

Very true What I meant is that he looks like the odd man out looking elsewhere . Let's just say that as a commanding officer he's on the lookout and protecting his team focused on a trivial (? ) event and therefore vulnerable .
