The Zen Master:
"Imagine it's a foggy day. You're out on the lake with your boat. You can hardly see anything through the fog. Until suddenly another boat is coming through the swaths to you. You're getting angry.
You think: such an ass, I've painted my boat only yesterday........
and the strange boat was already breaking into yours. You can hear the fresh color, which you have so painfully applied yesterday, just peeling off. Anger!
Then you look more closely and see: the other boat is empty. No one inside. Nobody who has rammed you intentionally.
Your anger flies.
You sigh and think: oh what the hell, then I have to repaint it.
The thing is done for you."
The Zen Master continued:
"So it is with everything in life and with all the people you meet:
It's like we're rammed from an empty boat."
The student said:
"Hmm, there is something to it. But even if I see that the boat is empty, I'll curse the whole world and just imagine there's someone in the boat who wants to harm me intentionally."
Then the Master answered:
"Probably true. But the more we practice, the easier it is for us to calm down and see how ridiculous and useless it is to hold on to anger. Guilt is always the empty boat."
