Re: Website Redesign

Post by KateR »

I'm looking for some help.

I'm working very hard on converting the Features section of the website, which includes all the Birthday websites we made over the years.

Several of them included Flash videos in the form of SWF files. These are practically obsolete now, and so I'm trying to save them as videos before they disappear completely. But I am having no luck converting SWF files to anything recognizable, like mp4 or m4v or avi - heck, I'd even accept flv or vob at this point.

I've tried every piece of software I have and several online converters, and nothing will work. The best I can get is audio only.

Does ANYONE know how, or have the capability, to convert an SWF file to SOME kind of video???

Thanks for any help,

Kate

I use this to convert files. I have not yet tried SWF files. But maybe it will help you.

Do I need to speak German?

Whatever I tried to click seemed to expect me to download or install something. If I send you the SWF file, would you like to try to convert it?

Meanwhile, I got the SWF file to play properly, but I don't suppose it will play for anyone without Flash. :(

Now I have another problem. I'm trying to convert a page that was written in Frames, and I need to make it work with javascript. But I don't speak javascript, and trial and error is getting me nowhere.

Does anyone speak enough javascript to figure out what I am missing?

You know the saying, "Even a blind pig..."?

Another half hour of trial and error, and I think I finally figured it out.

I hope.

Still can't convert the SWF, though.

Actually, you can set the language, but I found no English-strange. Anyway, you can send me the file and I'll give it a try. I have found several sites that convert this type of file. Depends however on the size.

Do you have after effects? by Adobe.
How to convert an .swf file into a .mov or .mp4 file:

1. Open up After Effects and import the .swf file.

- File > Import > Import File > (Choose .swf file)

2. Drag the .swf file into your Render queue, or send it through the tabs

- Composition - Add to Render Queue

3. In the render queue set your settings in the Output module and Output the file to wherever you want it to go.

I hope this helps...good luck on converting your .swf file.

I found this about converting .swf files.

Yes, I've found several sites, too, but they only seem to convert it into an audio file. I've tried all the video editing software I have, too, and while they seem to be able to convert an flv Flash file, they don't seem to recognize swf. I even have screen capture software, but I'm getting really fuzzy, jerky video out of it.

This is from the Birthday Site for 2002. (And there will be another one for 2003.) I don't suppose a lot of people are stopping by there to check them out anymore, but I would like a way to preserve them before they are completely obsolete.

I'll send you the file and see if you have any luck. Thanks!

Hi Kate,
I have the FormatFactory 4.5.0. With this program you can convert SWF. It is in English too.
I hope this helps you further.

I think I may have finally figured it out.

I discovered that Adobe Premiere will open an SWF file, but ONLY as a VIDEO file. My other software will either open or convert an SWF file but ONLY as an AUDIO file. So I managed to edit the two versions together in Premiere and make an mp4 out of it. It's not quite as sharp as the original, but at least the motion is not fuzzy and jerky, and it's far better than what I was getting on the free conversion apps.

So... I think for now this will work. At least all that effort in creating the original file back in 2002 won't be lost. And just in time, too. My Chrome is now giving me popup warnings that Flash will no longer be supported by the end of 2020. That wipes out the charity page too. <sigh>

Thanks all,

Kate

Have you tried this?

If you don't want to install a program, I'd be glad to try it on one of your files.
