Okay, the language setting works, although the translation is a mixture of German and English, somewhat difficult to understand, because the syntax is also incorrect, but who can not understand English at all, it certainly helps.
I do not know how it is in the other languages.
I had fun trying it out and going to stay with the original :D

Does anyone here speak javascript?

I still can't figure it out, and I've hit a roadblock.

The same javascript that lets the photo gallery sort and display pictures, is the one that prevents the off-canvas menu from sliding in when you click the icon on a mobile phone.

I have tried every possibility for the last two hours, and I can't figure out a way around it. :( :(

Thanks to Brian and Daniel who came to my rescue, I have been able to break through several road blocks, but it still seems that every little step doesn't work at first and has to be beaten into submission. :(

My current dilemma: high resolution devices like newer smart phones display the site as if it were a full screen. In other words, it's the opposite of the problem I had before - instead of the images being too big for the screen, everything looks very small.

The experimental software that I used before had so much junk built into it that I have gone back to designing by hand, but that previous software did, apparently, compensate for pixel density somehow, and I can't seem to duplicate the results. I'm convinced that it is an issue with device pixel ratio. I've tried to add media queries to compensate, but it's not working for me. On the other hand, I also have a hard time getting my phone to refresh, so it may be possible that I fixed the problem but I just can't see the updated results.

So I'm back to asking what you see on your devices.Hopefully it still works properly on a computer monitor, but on a small device like a phone, do the images fill the screen, or are they now looking very tiny as the screen tries to fit the whole page into the space?

The latest incarnation is here:

So far, only the main page and the Photo Gallery are linked and working. But the good news is, I figured out how to get the Photo Gallery to also play videos.

Thanks for any input! I'm going to bed now and hoping we have electricity tomorrow.

This is what it looks like on my smartphone, I think I need a magnifying glass
Image

Tablet:
is that blurry or is it because of my eyes?
Not easy to read, unless I turn the screen

Yeah...........

My turn … sorry I can't send pics like J. If my smartphone is in a vertical position , the words are very small (but not blurred ) and there's a big, black rectangle under the facebook , twitter...icons . If I hold it horizontally, it's fine (no black rectangle and readable) . BUT I have two boxes next to each other ( 1 pic and text next to each other , not like J's which are under each other ).

My phone is doing what JackGywer's is doing, both horizontally and vertically.

On my computer, when I resize the browser, it works properly - the banner changes, photos and text rearrange themselves, the navigation panel disappears, and the image fills the screen.

The problem is that high resolution phones have basically the same resolution as a computer screen, so they try to shrink everything down to fit in the window just as a computer monitor would.

I made five different versions of the top banner - one with 7 little faces, one with 5, with 3, with 1, and one with just the title for very small screens. The fact that our phones are pulling up the banner with five faces means that the phone thinks it has a resolution between 900 and 1100 pixels wide. If the banner has seven faces, or if the pictures and text boxes are lining up side-by-side, then the phone thinks its resolution is even higher than that. It really should be closer to 400-600px, which means that it has a device pixel ratio of 2 or 3 to 1.

I've done all kinds of research and tried all kinds of media queries to correct for it, but even though many resources explain WHY this happens, very few explain what to do about it. In fact, several resources suggest you shouldn't even bother to address pixel ratio because each new phone will have a new ratio and it's not possible to accommodate them all unless you basically build two separate sites, and that's where I draw the line. But if that's the case, and the new site looks just as small as the old site, then there is really no point in my devoting all this time to a redesign.

Seriously, this has been much more complicated than I had anticipated, and every little step takes days to problem-solve. It has taken weeks to get the Photo Gallery to work without conflicting with the menu. My earliest sample page resized so the pictures and text boxes filled the screen, so I know theoretically it is possible, but I have no way to figure out what hidden default setting was causing that to happen.

If anyone has experience with media queries and device pixel ratios, I'd welcome any suggestions.

Thanks,

Kate

I'm holding my breath...

I may have found a solution, but I'm afraid to touch anything for fear it will disappear.

Is this any better?

It's still not perfect - the pictures and the text boxes should be the same width and centered, and that only seems to happen once it's horizontal, but that should (hopefully) be an easier problem to fix.

Thanks for the feedback.
