Spambots

Post by KateR »

I knew it was too good to last...

When this new Forum started, I was getting registrations only from real people, but within a few weeks, the spambots started appearing. Now I get more than a dozen registrations a day from fake IDs, usually from Russia or China, and usually using gmail addresses, who want to advertise cheap drugs and porn and all manner of unrelated topics.

On the old Forum, I was able to ban certain emails or IPs which would prevent these "people" from registering but would not affect members who were already here and posting from one of the blocked IPs or domains. However, I'm not sure that works on the new Forum. I tried blocking one problem IP a few weeks ago and got a worried email from one of our members saying that she was suddenly blocked too. I fixed that problem, but the fake gmails keep pouring in.

I have just now blocked a bunch of the problem gmail addresses, and I am hoping that members with gmail addresses will not be affected. If you are, then you probably won't see this message ( :!: ) but if you hear of problems with gmail people suddenly being blocked, let me know and I will have to try to find another solution. If you use gmail, and are still able to log in just fine, let me know that too, so I can tell that the solution is working.

Have I mentioned how much I hate spam?

Thanks!

I had posted a reply earlier but removed it because I wanted to keep your post with your name on it so others could see your message. I hope others will read it and respond.

I don't have a gmail address so I should be okay.

Thank you very much for all you do to keep the spambots away!!!!! I hate them too!!!

Hi Kate!
Oh I know these problems very well! In my forum I integrated a captcha to prevent such spam because with this it's much more difficult for spammers. Don't know if it's possible in this forum and if this would help. ;)

Yes, thanks, this forum does use captcha. At least I set it to do that. Didn't people have to type in the letter/number picture code when they registered? Unfortunately, these spammers keep finding ways to get through anyway.

So I just reset the anti-spam feature to use a question/answer check. If people don't know who "RDA" is, then they shouldn't be here!

BTW, another anti-spam feature is that new members that I don't know are moderated for the first few posts. I need to approve the message before it will appear. Unfortunately, the posts waiting for approval do not always appear in my folder right away for monitoring, and so I miss a few if I have to go looking for them. I'm still working on that.

Just today I approved two more posts that were actually sent last week and I just never saw them. I do apologize to the two people who posted and are probably wondering why their messages didn't appear! Once I know people are not spambots, I take them off moderation, so their next posts should go through just fine.

<sigh> It's always the few, the spambots, that make life difficult for the rest of us.

Well, Kate, I don't use gmail here, even I have the account, so this works just fine. Thank you for the hard work you do here. We all appreciate it.
